Banking as a Service

Arrangements in which a bank provides regulated account or payment capabilities through a nonbank partner's customer experience.

Buying context

Why it matters

The bank may not control the interface while remaining responsible for customers, compliance, funds, complaints, fraud, and third parties. Growth can outpace the operating and governance capacity needed to oversee the program.

Due diligence

Questions to ask

  1. Which party controls customer acquisition, disclosures, funds flow, servicing, complaints, fraud, and account closure?
  2. Can the bank independently identify every customer, balance, transaction, intermediary, and open issue?
  3. What limits growth by product, geography, customer type, partner, transaction, funding, and operational capacity?
  4. How can the bank pause or exit the program while preserving customer access, records, funds, and obligations?
