External Audit

Independent examination of financial statements and related controls under an applicable assurance standard.

Buying context

Why it matters

An external audit supports confidence in reported financial information but does not replace management's records or internal controls. Independence, scope, materiality, specialist work, and communication with directors matter.

Due diligence

Questions to ask

  1. Which entities, statements, controls, systems, locations, and specialist areas are in scope?
  2. How does the firm establish and maintain independence from tax, consulting, and other services?
  3. Who will perform the fieldwork, and what banking, IT, valuation, and credit experience do they bring?
  4. How will corrected and uncorrected differences, control deficiencies, estimates, and disagreements reach the audit committee?
